Introduction
Hong Kong pop songs developed rapidly in the 1980s and mid-1990s but experienced a decline towards the end of 1990s. In the late 1990s, the popularity of Internet, electronic information and MP3 and the prevalence of European, American, Japanese, Korean, Singaporean and Malaysian pop songs in Hong Kong have affected the development of the local recording industry. Moreover, the renowned singers quitted the industry while there was a lack of new talented singers. As a result, the development of Hong Kong pop songs was stuck.
However, the prevalence of Internet has provided a platform for composing and publishing songs for the public. A number of independent musicians pop up and this brings in new energy to Hong Kong pop songs. In order to earn a living, local musicians started selling their work in single form. Besides, they try to compose with different music elements, for example, using instrumental music of piano, and stringed instruments as accompaniment, or cooperate with foreign musicians to bring in new power to local pop songs.
